Growing up in Nigeria, a lot of people called me “Oyibo” which means white man, owing to my light skin tone and also the way I communicated with fluency in English Language.
Nevertheless, my parents always made sure that I knew about my culture and traditions. I tried learning how to sew when I was really young, because I love African clothes and it reflects my African roots.
When I became a real estate agent, like most real estate professionals I wore a suit, following the “norm” with a lot of discomfort till I decided to discontinue this unspoken tradition, moving forward by wearing African attire instead of suits.
At first, I was nervous about how my colleagues and clients would react. I know that some people might see my clothing as unprofessional or inappropriate.
I’m unbothered by this, knowing that my authentic self is more important than any dress code and that my clients would appreciate my individuality and cultural pride.
Moving forward it is the realisation that authenticity is the key to connecting with people on a deeper level and that my clothing will help me stand out in a sea of suits.
Now, I feel confident and empowered every time I put on my African attire. I know that I’m representing myself, my culture, and my clients in a way that’s true to who I am. And I know that I’m helping to break down the barriers that exist in the real estate industry, one colourful outfit at a time.
